A Theology of Liberation and Aesthetics

In my research, I explore some connections between liberation theology and theological aesthetics. For various reasons, in their theological reflection, the first generation of liberation theologians in Latin America did not consider the aesthetic dimension of praxis. My thesis argues that the liberating power of aesthetics is a medium of God’s action in the world, especially on behalf of the poor. To explain this insight, I critically explain the fundamental premises of a liberation theology in Latin America. Then I correlate a theology of liberation with four aspects of a theological aesthetics, namely, the arts, perception, imagination, and beauty. The outcomes of this correlation constitute what might be called a theology of liberation and aesthetics.
